A 4-speed automatic is optional on naturally aspirated models and standard on the XT. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Other available features include automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a hill-hold assist on manual transmission models, and navigation system. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.

Diesel. A wild card in the urgent quest for fuel efficiency is the diesel engine, quite popular in passenger cars in Europe. Americans have flirted with the diesel, but they haven't fallen in love with it.Diesels have advantages in fuel economy, extended driving range and durability. The diesel also delivers healthy levels of torque relative to its size and displacement. The problem: controlling particulate emissions, engine clatter and cost.

Now that i have seen the 2009 Ford Escape I am truly in love and I am going to buy one this year or maybe wait for the 2010 model to come out so I can see how ford improved this automobile. Good luck ford I dont think you can make it any better without going way up on the price.

"Some of us still believe in electric drive and pure battery power," said Robert C. Stempel, the former GM chairman and chief executive who helped start the EV1 program. Forced out in the early 1990s, Stempel now runs a company that develops batteries and alternative automotive technology. Improvements in battery technology, especially with lithium ion batteries, may one day resurrect EVs by extending their driving range.

Being loaded with creature comforts and luxury amenities, MKS also is about 600 pounds heavier than Taurus, weight you feel in the wheel when accelerating or taking corners and turns. MKS doesn't float like a boat or wander like a Town Car. Though larger than Taurus, it still slips into and out of parking spaces and garage stalls. But a bit more nimble steering would reduce the weighty feel in the wheel.

While grueling desert rallies have typically been home to modified Pajeros, Mitsubishi revealed it will bring a custom-built Lancer, the MRX09s, to the 2009 Dakar rally. Designed for the FIA's T1 class, the Lancer MRX09 shares little (if anything) with the production car. Although Mitsubishi released only a sketch today, the MRX09 seems to resemble the outgoing Pajero Evolution more than an actual production Lancer. First of all, Mercedes has installed its Direct-Steer System on the SLK. The idea behind this system is that the steering ratio should be relatively slow on-center to reduce dartiness, but should quicken as you turn the wheel further. Rather than going the BMW Active Steering route, which uses a computer to control the constantly varying steering ratio, Mercedes chose the right route: the Porsche way. In place of complex actuators, pumps, and computers, the Mercedes system requires no additional parts - the rack is designed to change to a quicker ratio after a certain amount of lock.

Having driven the new Monster 696 for my first-ever motorcycle lesson, I, Howard Wilner can tell you that I thought it was cool, though I obviously have no point of reference for comparison with other bikes. I also can tell you that I barely tapped its performance capabilities (less than 3 seconds from 0 to 60 mph, and a top speed estimated at 135 mph). It was kind of like taking Drivers' Ed in a Ferrari.

2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA STYLING | [7 out of 10] "the new Elantra adopts a taller, curvier look" Washington Post: "the car does not pretend to be hot, hip, sexy or wicked" Kelley Blue Book: "not necessarily an example of modern style" Edmunds: "interior quality is quite literally hit or miss" Experts at TheCarConnection.com find the 2008 Hyundai Elantra's styling somewhat generic. The 2008 Hyundai Elantra is the South Korean brand's compact sedan, slotting between the small Rio and the mid-size Sonata in the lineup. Completely redesigned last year, the current Elantra sedan is wider and longer, with more interior room than before-enough to make it a mid-size by some considerations. Of this year's model, Cars.com says, "the new Elantra adopts a taller, curvier look," noting that "it follows the look of the full-size Azera sedan-which is not the most distinctive design." Rather than generic, Washington Post considers it "unpretentious," .

Only 2009 Subaru Impreza Road RX versions of the Impreza have been made available for us to test. For better or worse, these sporty compacts have a softer, more mainstream feel to them than their edgy predecessors. They still don't quite match the refinement of the MazdaSpeed 3 or Volkswagen GTI, but WRX models are fun to drive and boast standard all-wheel drive, a feature unavailable on either of those rivals.( HOWARD WILNER dealers uneasy as GM weighs possible sale)

The legend is real. The 2009 Nissan GT-R, the car known to many as the Nissan Skyline in Japan, can run as fast as the fastest Porsche. It handles as well as the most agile Lamborghini. It does all of those things at a relative fraction of the cost of its putative betters. It is a performance car supreme. And it is frustration of the most excruciating sort.

For years, BMW has been refining the liquid hydrogen fueled sedans that it has placed in field trials on multiple continents, championing the use of hydrogen in conventional engines in lieu of the more popular fuel cell. These hydrogen vehicles have improved over the years, making the most of renewable hydrogen fuel in their internal combustion powerplants. Now, this automaker is putting its stamp on the hydrogen record book with adaptations of this hydrogen engine technology, fielding a land speed record car that has passed the 185 mph mark and claimed an additional eight records as well. Along the way it has achieved recognition by the Federation Internationale de lAutomobile as the fastest hydrogen car in the world.

By utilizing less space under the hood--replacing a six-cylinder with a four-cylinder, for example--stylists have more freedom in designing a vehicle and making it aerodynamic. The trick, of course, is to downsize without disappointing the driver with an anemic, overworked motor that makes the vehicle feel like a rental car.

There was so much potential - 480 horsepower available for the asking, 430 foot-pounds of torque and an all-wheel-drive system with rear-wheel-drive bias, the way all-wheel-drive should be in a premium sports car.

These midsize cars offer sedan and wagon body styles and come with all-wheel drive and horizontally opposed 4-cyl engines. Legacy is available in 2.5i and 2.5 GT trim. The 2.5i models have 175 hp. GTs are turbocharged and have 243 hp. Manual transmission is standard. Automatic is optional, except on the sport-themed GT spec.B sedan. ABS, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags are standard. An antiskid system is standard on GT, unavailable otherwise. The spec.B has a sport suspension and specific interior trim. Legacys have a 60/40 split folding rear seatback for '07; it replaces a center pass-through. Remote engine start is a new option for automatic-transmission versions.

What it is 2009 Ford Edge Sport 2008 Chicago Auto Show: Names can set up false expectations, such as blind date Heather who arrives in all her hideousness. Another example would be the Edge crossover, which as it turned out, wasnt so edgy in terms of look or overall character. That changes, to some degree, with the launch of the 2009 Ford Edge Sport, a version of the original with body and wheel upgrades aimed at giving the vehicle a more aggressive presence, and a few interior tweaks to give buyers the sense that theyre driving something actually unique. Were still waiting for a truly sporty Edge, with a manual shift mode and stiffer suspension components, but the Sport at least fills a void for those seeking a bit of tude with their non-SUV.

Driving Impressions from 2008 BMW 335i Sedan.Though slotted between the base 328i and hot rod M3, the 335i has a special sport suspension and incredible twin-turbo six cylinder that is flat out fast; faster than the last generation M3. Its something of a sleeper hot rod. When I got the keys, I was excited to drive the car but worried because it was bright, crimson red with 300 hp and a 6-speed manual transmission. Perfect color and combination for cop bait!

WILNER HOWARD green policies, not just cars, draw shoppers
So what happened to the 4,000 battery-powered ZEVs placed in California by major automakers between 1998 and 2003? (Most of the cars were leased rather than sold.) Despite the overwhelming enthusiasm and advocacy of electric car drivers, Ford, GM, Honda, and Toyota have all scrapped their electric vehicle (EV) programs, saying there's just no market for the cars. At a mock funeral for their electric cars, a group of EV drivers expressed their condolences. One participant said, "Unfortunately, very few Americans had a chance to drive an electric car before it was canceled."

The redesigned 2009 Pontiac Vibe AWD receives more aggressive styling, but maintains its balanced combination of useful cargo capacity and reasonable fuel economy. Looking sportier than it drives, the Vibes steering is not as crisp as some competitors, and the suspension is basic Toyota Corolla. Our test car was equipped with the same 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine as the base Camry, which certainly has easier work in the smaller Vibe. When mated to a smooth-shifting automatic transmission, this combo delivers a solid 20+ mpg around town. Rear-seat legroom and headroom are good, making this a good family alternative to a small SUV. Howard Wilner said that the rear cargo area and the seatbacks have a hard surface that is easy to clean after hauling, but it also tends to let items slide around a clever cargo organizer helps secure smaller items.

Smaller Displacement Motors. One trend is certain: Auto companies will move to smaller displacement motors.Except when charging up a hill or trying to merge onto a freeway ramp, most vehicles need only a fraction of the motor's maximum power. Smaller and lighter engines offer multiple advantages: lower friction losses and weight-savings on the surrounding body structure and suspension.

WILNER HOWARD 2009 rules =] The 2009 Maserati GranTurismo lineup expands to include a top-line S model. This four-passenger coupe shares much of its basic design with Maserati's Quattroporte sedan. The standard powertrain is a 405-hp 4.2-liter V8 and 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-column-mounted shift paddles. New for 2009 is an S model with a 440-hp 4.7-liter V8 shared with the Alfa Romeo 8C. Unlike most front-engine cars, the GranTurismo has a rear weight bias, which Maserati says improves handling. Standard safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and front curtain airbags. Standard on all models are dual-zone climate control, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, and a rear obstacle detection system. Also standard are a navigation system, 10-way adjustable front seats with memory that power forward to ease entry to the rear seats and a power tilt and telescopic steering column that raises and lowers for easier ingress. The MiTo makes the rest of Alfa's mainstream lineup - handsome, well-admired cars all - look a bit staid. But one wonders if the MiTo is overstyled. MiTo buyers can customize their cars endlessly, choosing among ten shades of paint, fourteen finishes for the headlight and taillight surrounds (shiny or satin chrome, opaque black and titanium gray, plus the ten body shades), and five styles of sixteen-inch to eighteen-inch wheels. Two versions of red paint are available: the traditional nonmetallic Alfa Red and a lighter Giulietta red, yet another reminder of Alfa Romeo's past.
